Help Protect Youth OHVs! Stop the Ban of Youth Motorcycles and ATVs! NYTRO OHV NewsNew Yo rk Tra il Ri de rs Orga ni zat i o n , Inc. Volume 17, Issue 1 February 2009 Take Action! Write your Representatives and the Consumer Product Safety Commission Today! On August 14th, 2008, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). Intended to make children's everyday toys safer, the rule governing implementation of the act threatens to end youth off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding entirely. According to section 101(a) of the enacted legislation, all youth products containing lead must have less than 600 parts per million (ppm) by weight. The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has interpreted the law to apply to various components of youth OHVs including the engine, brakes, suspension, battery and other mechanical parts. Even though the lead levels in these parts are small, they are still above the minimum threshold. The unavailability of youth OHVs will devastate family OHV recreation and cripple amateur competition, creating a domino effect across all aspects of motorized recreation. In order to assure continued availability and access to youth OHVs, the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) and Specialty Vehicle Industry Association (SVIA) submitted petitions to the CPSC asking that certain vehicles be excluded from the final rule governing the law. It is critical that Congress and the CPSC know the petition exists and that they act on it to maintain a vital form of recreation for American families, preserve youth racing and protect the thousands of jobs associated with this industry. Please write or call your Representative and the CPSC today and ask them to approve the petition to exclude youth OHVs from the CPSIA lead content requirements. You can send your Representative a letter by going to http:// www.amadirectlink.com/legisltn/rapidresponse.asp. To contact the CPSC directly, use their contact form by going to http:// www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/info.aspx. Check us out on the web at http://www.nytroatv.org Chapter Information NYTRO Inc. Next Poker Run • Saturday, April 25, 2009 • Everyone, please plan on coming out and helping your club! If we get enough help, everyone can also ride at the event!!! Suggestions to improve next poker run: • Use orange cones to mark the path to trailhead from parking area (Ron to help out obtaining loaners) • More signs needed, especially from parking area to trail head (Dave Stetson to help out with these!) - Spell out “Wrong Way”—no one knew what the “W” signs meant - Signs to “Trail Head” - “Two-way” (spelled out) - “More Trails” - “Exit” - Signs to and from special event(s) • Add 90° turn arrows for sharp turns • Lay out a specific course for people to follow—Green and Blue trails. • Paint all sign posts with a bright color—they blended too much (Karl has taken care of this) • Put numbers on the chip buckets - Also post “you are here” maps at bucket locations. • Can the driveway into the parking area be widened? • We would like to help move the horse fence over so we can use the old snowmobile trail and eliminate the two-way trail after the bridge. • Remove the right-turn green arrow at the intersection to the Snack Bar. Too confusing. Just have a Snack Bar sign. • Need more volunteers so that people aren’t stuck in one spot all day. • Pam will have flyers ready shortly for everyone to distribute. Memorial Weekend Ride We will travel to Bloody Skillet, then the Sproul State Forest (Whiskey Springs). Get your reservations in Renovo! Change of venue for Broome County meetings We will be moving our meetings to the California Grill restaurant at 912 Vestal Parkway East, Vestal, NY 13850. Pam & Gary Burns Volume 17, Issue 1 Page 4 Chapter News NYTRO Northern NY Club Officers President-Mike Bellinger e-mail: nytroofnny@yahoo.com phone: (315) 232-2076 * * * * * * * * * * NEWS FROM THE NORTH It’s been a roller coaster ride for the Northern Chapter over the last few years. Last year, countless hours and funds where donated to pursue the opening of what we thought was finally to be a Tri County ATV Trail System. Politics or should say Politian's’ personal agendas have changed our plans again. The Towns and private landowners stepped up to the plate and did their part. We were assured the necessary County roads that bring the trails together would be ready and opened by spring. After the communications I received today, this is looking like it may never happen, at least not this year. With the fragile economy on the Legislators minds a “Recreational ATV Trail System” is the last thing they are considering. It’s the Clubs that need a Trail System to survive. There are several meetings planned this month and, by some miracle, I am hoping things can be changed. On a brighter note, the last two active ATV Clubs in Jefferson County have joined forces with Lewis and Oneida Counties creating the new Tug Hill Adirondacks ATV Association. http:// www.tughilladirondacksatv.com/ tughilladirondacksatvassociation/ index1.htm With the joint efforts of all the clubs working together we hopefully will be able to overcome more obstacles and move forward for the benefit of all. The new web site will be a “go to spot” for the latest update of what’s happening. At 17.5 feet of snow since October we may be in for a long wait until we see dirt again. Have calls and letters to prepare for so will be a short newsletter for this month. So until we meet on the trails may you and your Family’s ride Safe! We have a lot of things that we need to start working on to keep the Chapter active. We need to hold officer’s election for this year. Paul Hansen has taken a job out of state so he has stepped down from VP. We also need to start working on the Website and getting our information out to the local dealerships as well. I have started working on getting all the landowners information and property maps for the area on Rt.31. Once I have all the information We need to GPS the area and do an outline of what we would like to do. Since this area is getting developed very quickly we need to move quickly with our ideas and plans. This is going to take a lot of legwork and I need the ALL the members to pitch in, lend a hand and volunteer! My time is limited during the day. SO anything that any of the members can do to work with the Town board and Officials would be helpful. I will be send out an email to let you know what the next step is for getting together on this.
