NYTRO OHV NewsNew York Trail Riders Organization, Inc. Volume 15, Issue 6 June 2007 NYTRO OHV NewsNew York Trail Riders Organization, Inc. Volume 15, Issue 6 June 2007 Support the New York ATV Economic Impact Study (S.5706 Maziarz / A.8551 Morelle) May 31, 2007 Action Alert — Less than one month left in the Legislative Session! Contact your state legislators today to support a statewide ATV economic impact study. And remember in NY “ATV” includes off- highway motorcycles as well. Approximately $100,000 is needed to fund a study which would determine how much the state and local economies are positively impacted by ATV recreation. Follow the steps listed below to urge your Legislators to support funding for the study NOW! The Details: Legislation has been introduced (S.5706 – Maziarz / A.8551 – Morelle) to direct New York State to prepare a report on the economic impact of ATV-related tourism in the state of New York. But with less than one month to go in the Legislative Session, its chances of success depend on you! ATV-related recreation supports jobs, generates sales and income taxes, and represents an integral component of the tourism industry and the overall economy in New York state. Efforts are underway in other states to promote tourism, including motorized vehicle associated recreation in the name of economic development, but not here in New York! The State legislature needs to recognize the number of people who engage in motorized vehicle recreation in New York State and the actual expenditures relating to that recreation. Moreover, our policymakers must realize the potential that the establishment of a statewide trails system has in relation to creating jobs. Senator Maziarz and Assemblyman Morelle already recognize this and have introduced legislation to provide state policymakers with accurate and timely information regarding the tourism and economic impact of ATV-related recreation in New York State. Most importantly, however, the extension of the ATV registrations for the 2006-07 registration term (at $10 per ATV) left the additional $5 of YOUR money in the State coffers – and we want it back! Simple accounting estimates that the lack of allocation of the $5 resulted in $690,000 of registration fees that were collected and never returned to ATV registrants as a result of this repeal. This study will be funded with your money and benefits you – the ATVer! Grassroots Action: So, NYSORVA is asking all ATV registrants to call their State Senator (518-455-2800) and (Continued on page 3) Newsletter Article Submissions: nytroatvny@aol.com Check us out on the web at http://www.nytroatv.org Chapter Information NYTRO Inc. Huddled around the woodstove at the community park cabin, we remised on the crazy winter that we just wrapped up. Snow fall ran from 4 to 10 feet depending on where you lived. Last week we had close to a foot of snow here in Loraine. Current temperatures are in the 60’s & have quickly melted most of the snow packs. Deb, I & the kids did a 10 mile ATV excursion this weekend. The Winona Forest still has a foot of snow, so travel was limited in some of the more wooded areas. Roadside clean up is planned along with some trail and parking lot repairs for next month. At our County ATV meeting the Tug Hill Snirt Run was discussed. It was reported that they earned over $10,000.00 from the 1000 riders. But was condemned for having such an early season ride. It was reported that in Barnes Corners alone within a mile there was $30,000.00 damage done to yards and roadside. They do not plan on doing any more repairs than running a back blade thru when it dries up. Our County Trail Coordinator is vacationing in Hawaii and is reported to be no further closer to having the Master ATV Trail Plan ready. Two of the local clubs have gone on record as no longer supporting NYSORVA. The Insurance issue continues to fall short of expectations and may not be proceeding in the area unless the non-club members start joining clubs and working for the trails. Spring must be as the smell of chicken barbeques spreads thru the air. Swept the leaves from the pool and topping it off over the next week as the summer approaches. Mosquito are flying, did not miss them. Looking forward to a new season and getting together with our new and old friends. Volume 15, Issue 6 Page 8 Sponsors Volume 15, Issue 6 Page 9 Susquahannock and Sproul Ride Review By Gary Burns, STNY President On Sunday, May 27th, a group from NYTRO Southern Tier, NYTRO Western, and NYTRO Central met at Susquehannock State Forest in PA. The trails open up on Memorial Day weekend in PA each year. Saturday is usually pretty busy, but Sunday has a few less riders. We stopped along the way and met up with several groups of people. We arrived at around 12:30 pm at the parking area. Sitting at the entrance were Ben and Christine. Ben was the one that showed us the trails a couple of years ago. We have been going there every year for the past three years. Luckily there wasn't that many people parked there. The parking lot is fairly large, but we had a big group and pretty much filled the parking area. As you can see by the picture there were several of us. People were itchy to ride (including me), but we needed to get everyone arranged for a picture. It takes a little bit to get a big group arranged for a picture. After the picture was taken we got ready to go. Dave, Steve and I set off in our own group as we have sport quads. The others split up into a couple of other groups. It is very hard to keep everyone together when the group gets too large. We went around the short loop the first time. Figuring that we could go around and then catch up to the other group. The trails at Susquehannock are mostly beginner-type trails. The trails there are all two -way so you need to be careful when going around corners. Always stay to the right as much as possible. For the most part people follow staying to the right. However, I was going around a right hand corner and was really hugging the inside, as I came around there was a big utility quad all the way to his left and right in front of me! I was able to hit the brakes and the quad swerved back to the right and we missed. It can be a little scary! Also when you are riding you need to show number of quads that are behind you. You show this to the oncoming quads by showing the number with your fingers. The last rider shows a closed fist. However, keep in mind that sometimes groups come up behind, and even if the person is saying they are last there could still be more riders. We stopped after the first loop and got some drinks, then headed out on the longer loop to catch up with the main group. We caught up with them about 1/2 way around. They were stopped to eat and hit the bathroom. They headed out and we waited for about 20 minutes. We then headed out and met them back at the parking area. Everyone loaded up and headed to Renovo. We were staying there and then riding in Sproul Forest the next day. After every one cleaned up, most of us met at the Sportsman Restaurant for dinner. The food is very good there. They also offer bag lunches which you can order the night before. We met for breakfast at 8:30 am and picked up our lunches. Everyone who needed gas filled up and we met at the lower parking area. This parking area isn't very big, but fortunately for us there was only two cars there. Our group was big enough to fill the parking area again. We unloaded, and took another picture. This time without the quads as it wasn't big enough area to get all the quads lined up. I was ready to ride and headed up the trail first. Dave, Steve, Christine and Ben followed. The trail in is very nice. We moved along at a pretty good pace and figured that we would meet everyone at the first junction. Dave was having an issue with his Nerf bars hitting his rear tires. We hooked him up to a tree and Ben pulled them out a little with his winch. The rest of the group came by and we met up with them at marker 31. Unfortunately, we had some issues with machines. Christine's machine was skipping and Ben got water on his belt. They were the first ones to have to stop. They ended up having to leave early. However, they had gone down on Saturday so this was their third day of riding. Brent's machine was also having some problems with skipping. He had to be towed back to the parking area by Rick. Of course, maybe these problems had to do with running them through knee deep mud and water. Of course, that is the fun part of the ride for some. Myself, I don't care for the deep water and mud. However, I ride a sport quad, maybe if I had a utility I would like the mud and water more. I am sure that someday I will have one. I test drove a couple of Can-Am Outlanders and they were pretty good in the woods, pretty fast and went in the mud very well. Overall, the ride was pretty good and nobody got hurt which is always a good thing. Next year we will probably just go to Sproul as most people liked those trails better. If you are free next Memorial weekend, join us for a great ride. See you out on the trails. Let's Ride!
